Project 365: How to Take a Photo a Day and See Your Life in a Whole New Way
People will often say that their whole lives flashed before their eyes after they experienced a traumatic event. Perhaps it’s a bit morbid, but we think that sounds pretty incredible.
When Taylor McKnight started taking a photo a day on January 1st, 2004, he never imagined the project would not only serve as a way to remember a year, but also help him understand what was important to him in his life.
Whether it was his relationships, his career, or his fashion sense, recording a photo a day for a whole year left him with a rich visual history of his life. And it made him a better photographer to boot!
Now that he’s in the middle of doing it for a second time, we asked Taylor to write about it for us. Read on for our tutorial on how and why to create your own daily photographic history.
Project 365: How to Create a Daily Photographic History www.photojojo.com/content/tutorials/project-365-take-a-photo-a-day/
Why do it?
Taking a photo a day is a big undertaking with big payoffs. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider doing it:
- Imagine being able to look back at any day of your year and recall what you did, who you met, what you learned… (Often we find it hard to remember what we did just yesterday or even last night, let alone a whole year ago!)
- Your year-long photo album will be an amazing way to document your travels and accomplishments, your haircuts and relationships. Time moves surprisingly fast.
- Taking a photo a day will make you a better photographer. Using your camera every day will help you learn its limits. You will get better at composing your shots, you’ll start to care about lighting, and you’ll become more creative with your photography when you’re forced to come up with something new every single day.
Tips on How to Do It
Here are six tips on how to create your own Project 365:
- Bring Your Camera Everywhere
Yes, everywhere. Get in the habit. Grocery stores, restaurants, parties, work, and school. Going to a movie theatre? Snap a pic of the flick with your phone–there are photo-ops everywhere. If you have one of those tiny tiny cameras, you have no excuse not to have it in your pocket all the time. And if you don’t? Camera phones are a great substitute.
- Make Posting Easy
You can install blog software like Movable Type or Wordpress on your own site and create an entry for each photo, but for true ease of use, try a photo sharing site. Flickr will let you post a week’s worth of photos in 2 minutes flat, and fotolog and Photoblog.com are geared toward a photo-a-day workflow. Making it fast and easy means you’re much more likely to do it.
- Vary Your Themes
Try to capture the day’s events in a single photo. Perform photographic experiments. Take a photo of someone new you meet, something you ate for the first time, or something you just learned how to do. Take a photo of something that made you smile. And don’t forget to take a photo of yourself at least once a month so you can remember how you’ve changed, too.
- Tell a Story
Use your blog entry, or your photo description, to explain what’s going on in each day’s photograph. How good did that dinner taste? What made you want to take a photo of that stranger? It’ll help you remember down the road, and it gives friends following along a better appreciation of why you took the photo you did. You don’t need to write a lot, just enough to add some color.
- Don’t Stop, No Matter What
This is perhaps the most important tip of all. You will get tired of taking a photo every single day. Some days, you will consider giving up. Don’t. The end result is worth the effort. Remind yourself why you wanted to do it in first place.
There will be times you’ll think there’s nothing interesting left to take a photo of, and times you’ll think you didn’t do anything exciting enough to take a photo of. There’s always a great photo to be made.
Get out of the house and take a walk. Or stay inside and look around. Take a photo of something important to you. Take a photo of the inside of your house so you can see how your taste has changed over the years. Take a photo of anything, just don’t stop.
N.b. It helps if you’ve told your friends about the project and asked them to follow along. Their encouragement will keep you going!
- Post early, post often
Plan on going through and posting your photos at least once a week so you don’t get backlogged and feel overwhelmed. Ideally, post every day or two. Again, spend the time up front to make sure it’s quick and easy to post. It’ll make all the difference.

[…] What a cool idea, found here, I would really love to take something like this on. Starting tomorrow I’m bringing my camera everywhere. This project has been made easier by the fact that I just purchased myself a new purse that’s actually big enough to hold everything (about time I did that). I’m thinking I’ll set up a separate blog to keep track of it, I might convert our photo blog because we’re really not doing a whole lot with it right now, or I could just start a whole new one because ya know WordPress updates aren’t already a pain in the butt, why not add one more. I’ll look into that tomorrow as it need to get up early for class/work tomorrow and need to get my beauty sleep (too late to start a new project tonight). […]

[…] Ok, as you guys know I have been unemployed for a while but that is about to end. I have hospital orientation Monday to begin my new job as a security guard (and yes I will have to carry a gun) so I am pretty excited about that. I will be back on third shift for the first time in 2 years. Today was another Saturday and another loss for the Tarheels. This time they were beaten by the University of South Florida out of Tampa(lol…so I’m sure Colleen is cheering). I think I’m one of the few people who doesn’t want to see John Bunting fired but with every loss that seems more and more like a probability. But basketball season is almost here and it looks like the Tarheels are a strong possibility of being the preseason 1 or 2. Now about today. Kind of uneventful but I did meet a new friend (who’s cute and seems nice) so we’ll see where that leads. My friend and I also ate lunch at my favorite restaurant (Hooters) so thats always nice. Ok, I think thats all for tonight but wish me luck because tomorrow my fantasy football team is going up against the league leader but I’m pretty confident. Oh, and to put as many different subjects as possible in one post on my upcoming birthday I will start my year long project of taking a picture a day and I’ll post here daily about that days picture. Good night all. […]

[…] I’m probably just creating myself one more thing to feel guilty about not doing, but in the interest of improving my photography and being more creative I’m decided to join in with the Project 365 idea. I’ve had my Canon 350D since March this year and I feel I’m only just getting to a point where I’m doing anything other than randomly waving it at things and pressing the button, and I tend to only take photos when I ‘go somewhere to take photos’. Yet a lot of the photography that I really like isn’t of the obvious stuff, so I’m hoping that this might be a way to start looking for pictures in everyday life rather than just when I visit scenic places or am somewhere surrounded by geeks with cameras. […] One other thing. I noticed a link on del.icio.us about an idea for a photography project that I’m going to try. The suggestion in the article was to take at least one picture a day for 365 days. So I started 4 days ago. The article recommends taking your camera with you every where you go. Or, failing that, at least carry your camera phone. Either way, if you’re successful you’ll hopefully have learned new things about your camera, new things about photography and will definitely get better at finding good shots. It doesn’t sound like a lot of time but even after 4 days, I’m already starting to worry that I’ll miss a day or two here and there. The bigger worry, though, is that I’m not sure yet how to display the photos. […]

[…] PhotoJojo explains how taking one photo every day for a year can help you see your life in a whole new way (Project 365). Why not try this by posting daily pictures of your own parish community on your church website? Sure, it’s a big commitment to get a new photo every day for your site—but think about the payoff: an historical record of your parish and an intriguing introduction for prospective parishioners. Find some ambitious seniors or schoolkids who can help daily. You can record not only the holy days and major events where you might typically have a lot of pics, but also the day-to-day activities and special moments that help define your community. […]

[…] Lifehacker linked to an article on taking one photo every day for a year, and I put it in the sidebar (Recent Web Clips) a while ago. Then, I thought, I could try that too. So, I started, on the 16 of October. I’ve started a photo set on Flickr, and will continue to add photos to that until mid-October next year. The most recent photo I’ve uploaded will appear in the sidebar here too. Who knows? It might be fun. So far, it’s been difficult to pick something to photograph each day, and I imagine that, some days, it will be even harder, but I’ve never shied away from difficult things. […]

There aren’t any photos up at the moment but starting on November 1st, I will be posting a photo every day. I have recently been reading a lot about other people who have done these photo-a-day projects and how they got so much out of them. It sounded like a lot of fun to me so I’m trying it! Also, it’s spring here and I feel like that is a good time to start a new habit and grow in a new way. I hope you enjoy seeing my snapshot treasures of these good times. […]

[…] It’s been suggested to me that I try to do the ‘Photo-A-Day’ thing, since I got a fancy new camera, etc. Well, I’m not going to. Trying to do it daily would be difficult for me, given that most days I’m either at work, at home, or traveling in-between (and taking a lot of pictures at work is not a good idea). I’ve decided to compromise on the project though, and try to take and post a photo every week. My reason for doing the photo-a-week thing, is to make sure I get out and take more pictures, working under the theory that it will make me a better photographer. With that said, I’m going to warn you that I don’t plan to have an exact schedule for the photos, so they may not show up on the same day every week. […]

Take a picture a day for a year, whether it has a theme or not, recording a photo a day for a whole year leaves you with a rich visual history of your life. So I decided I was going to jump on this right away and do it, so starting today, November 4th, 2006, I am going to take a picture a day and we will see how the project came out on November 4th, 2007. I think it’s a great idea. Just the other day I was talking to someone about how fast time seemed to be passing by. I started my new job 8 months ago, and it seems like it was just yesterday. If you stick to this procedure for the entire year, you’ll create an album that documents your year, but you’ll also have vastly improved your photo skills. Most of the projects I ran into on the internet were from people aged twenty something and most of them did not have kids (yet). The document they created therefor in many ways really reflect their personal, social lives. I think it will not be easy to portrait a year for an entire family of 6 (!) But, for sure we’ll give it a try. As of January 1, 2007 you’ll find one picture per day on the 365 project page on this site or, because I will use that brilliant site for uploading the pictures, at Flickr. RSS 2.0 […]

[…] I am looking forward to 2007. I don’t see it being quite as eventful as 2005, but more importantly I get the sense it won’t be as awful as 2006. The word that stands out the most when I think of the coming year is “Relief.” I think we are all going to take our collective sighs of relief that what seemed to be one hit after another this year has finally ceased. I don’t get the sense of anything very remarkable - good or bad - happening. If anything, I sense it to be a year of peace and content - where many of the struggles and aggravations of 2006 will be sorted out and settled one way or the other. I’ve said before that I don’t make resolutions for the new year. I don’t plan on changing that this year. I do want to try this, though, because it looks fun and if I can stick with it I think it will be interesting to see it develop over time. That isn’t a resolution so much as an idea. Some of my goals from last year were accomplished, and others weren’t - due to lack of interest or resources, or shifting priorities. I have goals for 2007 as well, but they are rather light in terms of goals - at least the tangible kind that I’ve held in the past. I think 2007 will be a good year for me to just Be. Be here. Be open. Be kind. Be daring. Be satisfied. Be less rigid. Be less controlled, and also less controlling. Be more relaxed. Be less anxious. Be willing to try. […]

[…] And there is one I want to share with all of you. Perhaps your kids would enjoy it, or you might, or maybe it can be a family project. A friend put me onto Project 365. The simple task of this project is to photoblog each day of the year, for one year. That means that you will want to take one picture each day and then upload them to a blog as often as you can (you may certainly upload a week’s worth at once; the real idea is to be sure you take a daily photo). […] 1. Knit my five for Dulaan. So far I have…1 small mitten. 2. Knit a bear for Mother Bear. I have the yarn and the pattern. I just need to get cracking. 3. Finish Sesame. The yarn that I am knitting this with was originally bought for Mariah, back when the pattern first came out. I knit all the way up to the yoke, connected it and knit around a couple of inches before putting it away for awhile. When I took it back out, it just seemed all wrong. I didn’t think it was going to fit, so I ripped it. Then I tried doubling it to make Blackberry from Knitty. This was another bad choice and I knew it as soon as I started. Bulky yarn and a bad shape for me. I got about half of it done. Now I have the back and a front done on Sesame. I need to finish this because I want to be done with this yarn. 4. Knit the Elizabeth Zimmerman fairisle yoke sweater from The Opinionated Knitter. I got the book for Christmas, just got the yarn, have swatched for the body part and will get started shortly. I guess the real resolution is to finish it. 5. One more sweater this year. I may knit more (I hope I will), but my resolution is for one more, bringing my total up to at least 3 for the year with Sesame and the fairisle yoke sweater. It can even be a child’s sweater if I’m feeling cheatery. Then it could go to Dulaan. 6. Design something of my own this year. I don’t care what it is. I have a few ideas I’ve been kicking around, so I’ll see what happens. 7. Project 365 I first found this through Crazy Aunt Purl and I think it’s a great idea. Of course, I was supposed to have started yesterday, but I forgot. Typical. But I think this will be fun and maybe when I’m done I’ll have an excuse to buy a better camera. One that takes the picture when you push the button and not after it’s thought about it for awhile. 8. No jumping into fads with both feet. I’m not actually much of a fad follower. But those Mason-Dixon warshrags–man I love them. Though I’m sick of seeing them. Anyway, I bought the book, then bought like 15 different colors of kitchen cotton. It’s so cheap, after all and I was envisioning full kitchen sets. Yeah, I ‘ve knit one. So no more of that. Moderation. 9. Don’t promise people knitted items. This is a stress I don’t need. From now on, if I want to knit something for someone I’ll make it a surprise when it’s finished and not before. I have somehow managed to agree to knit a friend from work a hat. I don’t want to knit him a hat. Luckily I didn’t agree on a specific time to deliver this stupid hat. 10. Quit feeling like I have to knit pairs of socks. Sometimes I just feel like knitting a sock. I don’t wear them anyway, so who cares? […]

[…] If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or my email updates. Thanks for visiting!A while ago photojojo.com featured an article on Project 365. I mentioned it a while ago stating that it was more a case of when and not if I would jump on board and begin one. The idea is to take one photo for every day of the year. Effectively this forces you to take more photos, which over time means taking better photos. A nice side effect of this is that you end up with a collection of interesting photos from throughout the year. Fast forward a few months and I’m under way. I started quietly on the weekend before my birthday and so far I have 19 photos in my Project 365 flickr set. […] OK, so I have been reading the Project 365 homepage and it would appear as if I should be taking a picture each day that sums up the day as a whole. Now as you can imagine there are only so many times I can take photos of the photocopier (n.b.: current number of photos of the photocopier taken = 0) so today I took a pic of the inside of the bus. Why is that this bus always either arrives on time or exactly 15 minutes late? What is this occasional obstacle that holds the bus up by EXACTLY 15 minutes? A red turnip maybe…. […]
